Repentance, Faith, and Baptism: The Response God Requires

Repentance, Faith, and Baptism: The Response God Requires

Theme: What salvation actually requires.

Core Scriptures: Acts 3:19; Hebrews 11:6; Romans 6:4; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Repentance: Turning from sin, self, and self-rule.

Faith: Trusting in Christ alone; obedience flows from belief.

Baptism: Burial of the old life after repentance and faith.

Goal: Teach what most Christians were never taught about salvation.

PART 6 — Repentance, Faith, and Baptism: The Response God Requires

From the “Depravity to Deliverance” Blog Series

By Armetia Cato, The Abide Collective

Introduction: God Does Not Leave the Human Soul Without a Response

After diagnosing humanity’s depravity and prescribing the cure through Christ, God now declares how we must respond. Not with:

❌ self-improvement

❌ ritual

❌ empty belief

❌ religious activity

❌ vague spirituality

But with **repentance, faith, and baptism** — the biblical response God Himself requires. These three are not human ideas.  They are not denominational preferences. They are not optional spiritual add-ons. They are **God’s ordained response** to the gospel.

  1. Repentance — The Turn God Commands

Repentance is not:

✖ crying

✖ feeling bad

✖ saying “I’m sorry”

✖ trying to improve

✖ making promises to God

Repentance is a **supernatural change of mind, heart, and direction** produced by the Holy Spirit.

The Greek word *metanoia* means: **“a complete change of mind and purpose.”**

True repentance includes:

✔ A change of mind about sin (it is evil, not harmless)

✔ A change of mind about self (I am guilty, not good)

✔ A change of mind about God (He is holy, not passive)

✔ A change of direction (turning *from* sin and *toward* God)

Repentance is not a work we perform. It is the heart’s response to the truth God reveals. This is why Scripture commands:

📖 **“Repent ye, and believe the gospel.” — Mark 1:15**

📖 **“God… commandeth all men every where to repent.” — Acts 17:30**

Repentance is not optional. It is the first evidence that God has opened the eyes of the heart.

  1. Faith — The Trust God Requires

Faith is not:

✖ positive thinking

✖ believing God exists

✖ going to church

✖ repeating a prayer

✖ being raised Christian

Biblical faith is **trusting in Christ alone** as Savior, Lord, and Redeemer.  Faith is the empty hand that receives the righteousness of Christ. It involves:

✔ Belief — trusting the gospel is true

✔ Reliance — trusting Christ’s work, not our works

✔ Surrender — yielding to His authority as Lord

Faith is not mere mental agreement.  Faith is life transfer.

📖 **“Without faith it is impossible to please Him.” — Hebrews 11:6**

📖 **“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” — Acts 16:31**

True faith always produces obedience because true faith changes the heart. We are saved **by grace through faith** — But never by faith that remains fruitless.

  1. Baptism — The Declaration God Commands

Baptism does not save us — But it is the *God-ordained* response of a saved person. Baptism is not:

✖ a tradition

✖ a symbol invented by the church

✖ a meaningless ritual

✖ a public ceremony only

✖ a childhood event disconnected from faith

In Scripture, baptism is:

✔ A declaration of repentance

✔ A confession of faith

✔ A burial of the old life

✔ A sign of union with Christ

✔ An entrance into the community of believers

Baptism says: “I belong to Jesus. My old life is dead. My new life is in Christ.”

Paul explains:

📖 **“We are buried with him by baptism into death… raised… to walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:4**

Jesus Himself commanded it:

📖 **“Repent, and be baptized every one of you…” — Acts 2:38**

📖 **“Go ye therefore… baptizing them…” — Matthew 28:19**

Baptism does not *cause* salvation, but salvation is incomplete in its obedience without baptism.  Repentance is inward. Faith is upward. Baptism is outward. Together, they form the full response God requires.

  1. Repentance, Faith, and Baptism — A Unified Response, Not Separate Options

Some teach:

  • “Only faith matters.”
  • “Repentance isn’t necessary.”
  • “Baptism is just a symbol.”

But Scripture never separates them. They are distinct —but never divorced. Where there is true repentance, there will be true faith. Where there is true faith, there will be obedience — including baptism.

  • Repentance turns *from* sin.
  • Faith turns *to* Christ.
  • Baptism declares **union** with Christ.

This is why the early church never asked: “Do you want to accept Jesus into your heart?” They asked: “Have you repented, believed, and been baptized into Christ?”

  1. Why This Response Matters: God Is Restoring What Adam Lost

Through repentance, faith, and baptism:

✔ Our guilt is removed (justification)

✔ Our nature is changed (regeneration)

✔ Our lives are redirected (sanctification)

✔ Our identity is forever transformed (adoption)

This is not human achievement. This is divine restoration. Adam brought:

  • guilt
  • condemnation
  • corruption
  • spiritual death

Christ brings:

  • forgiveness
  • righteousness
  • new birth
  • eternal life

Repentance, faith, and baptism are the doorway into this transfer — From Adam to Christ, From death to life, From wrath to grace.

Conclusion: God Requires a Response — Not Because He Needs It, But Because We Do

Repentance, faith, and baptism are not hoops God makes us jump through. They are the means by which the human soul enters the life God freely gives.

  • Repentance frees us from the lie. Faith anchors us to the truth.
  • Baptism declares our allegiance to the Savior.

This is God’s ordained response to the gospel — And the evidence that the cure in Part 5 has been received.

Next, Part 7 will explore: “The Great Exchange: Christ Takes Our Sin, We Receive His Righteousness — Surrender: Saying, Yes, Lord”
